Mahy was, and should be remembered as, on of New Zealand’s greatest writers, and not just a great children’s writer but a great writer full stop. Mahy was also a children’s librarian for many years.
I have seen on twitter people asking what is others to name their favourite stories by Mahy. I have trouble narrowing the field down from 100. If push comes to shove I would probably list The Lion in The Meadow, or The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate or The Witch in the Cherry Tree, or Jam.
Truly there is a little less magic in the world today.
