The Librarian in Black recently did a post on the benefits of telecommuting.
I won’t repost what she said, but her outline of the benefits of telecommuting was like music to my ears. You see being in rural area, with a good commute to the nearest main centre, it limits the job opportunities available. I love where we are and have no desire to leave the thriving town of Dannevirke, but sometimes the lack of opportunities gets one down. That’s one of the reason I love the development of social media. I get to engage at a professional level with others who are interesting in similar things to what I am.
The truth is I would love a job that had a telecommuting element, but I have trouble seeing how or where it would come about. The first thing hampering such a work situation is the deficit in our IT infrastructure. At present I am lucky to get broadband at my lifestyle block, but the theoretical limit is a measly 2MG and we are lucky to reach half of that on any given time. So utilising the many tools that enable telecommuting would be problematic. Also there doesn’t seem to be a culture in our libraries that would be sympathetic to telecommuting.
So is anybody out there in Kiwi Library Land telecommuting? How does that work for you? Is your institution really supportive, or a reluctant enabler? I would be interested to know.
